Tonight (April 7), the Law Newspaper of Ho Chi Minh City successfully organized the program "Lighting Up the Sea with Fishermen" launch ceremony, aimed at implementing the Action Plan for removing the IUU yellow card issued by the Prime Minister.
The program 'Lighting Up the Sea with Fishermen' aims to promote and educate fishermen and the younger generation about patriotism, love for the homeland, and the seas; to inspire the emotions and sense of responsibility of fishermen and the younger generation in protecting the sovereignty of the homeland's seas and islands; to encourage and support fishermen engaged in maritime economic activities, contributing to the protection of the sacred territory and waters of the homeland; to raise awareness among the general public about environmental protection by limiting the use of lead-acid batteries (hazardous and environmentally polluting); to promote fishermen's awareness of compliance with laws while fishing at sea, in line with the Action Plan to remove the IUU yellow card issued by the Prime Minister.
The program 'Lighting Up the Sea with Fishermen' is expected to support 5,600 fishermen nationwide
Specifically, over three years from 2023 to 2025, the program will be implemented in 28 coastal provinces and cities nationwide, including: Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien – Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Ho Chi Minh City, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, Kien Giang.
Speaking at the launch event, Mr. Nguyen Thai Binh, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Law Newspaper of Ho Chi Minh City and Head of the Organizing Committee, shared: "Each fisherman is a milestone of sovereignty at sea. To make each milestone stronger day by day, and to ensure that each fisherman can confidently engage in maritime activities, exploiting and fishing for seafood safely and legally, while developing their livelihoods and preserving sovereignty, requires the collective efforts and solidarity of the entire society. Especially in the current context, with Vietnam's seafood still under the European Commission's yellow card for the past five years, causing difficulties in the lives of our fishermen, this issue poses many challenges for all of us.
Mr. Nguyen Thai Binh, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of PLO of Ho Chi Minh City and Head of the program's Organizing Committee, delivered a speech at the launch event taking place tonight (March 7) in Ho Chi Minh City.
According to the Program Organizing Committee, each locality will select 200 fishermen facing difficult circumstances to receive gifts from the program. In total, 5,600 fishermen nationwide are expected to receive gifts, and the budget for the program implementation is estimated to be tens of billions of Vietnamese dong.
Each gift set for fishermen, valued at over 4 million dong, includes: 1 set of rechargeable battery, charger, and LED light; 1 handbook 'Essential Knowledge about Seafood Fishing' (edited by the Law Newspaper of Ho Chi Minh City) containing necessary legal information for fishermen to accompany various levels, sectors, units, and localities in implementing the Action Plan to remove the IUU yellow card issued by the Prime Minister; 1 waterproof bag and some accompanying medicines. Additionally, the program will collaborate with local authorities to provide additional gifts (scholarships, bicycles, books, notebooks, etc.) to the children of families facing tough circumstances or living in single-parent households.
Also, at the launch ceremony, the program 'Lighting Up the Sea with Fishermen' presented valuable gifts to fishermen and students facing difficult circumstances
Accompanying the program will be the participation of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Vietnam Fisheries Association, the Navy Command, the Border Guard Command, the Coast Guard Command, the Vietnam Fisheries Surveillance, the People's Committees, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committees of provinces/cities, and local fisheries associations. Miss Earth 2018, Nguyen Phuong Khanh, serves as the ambassador for the program.
